As part of a permit requirement for a new residence on the west side of Bainbridge Island, an existing concrete patio had to be removed, a “native” beach planting was to take it’s place.  The existing 18 inch tall concrete curb wall was to remain. A berm to cover the concrete wall and raise the bed slightly above the existing grade was planned to help stem periodic storm events that result in winter flooding.  Logs dispersed throughout and on the borders of the beds were also incorporated to blur the edges.  A sand and gravel mixture was specified for planting and the plants were carefully selected to mimic surrounding habitat.  All are native to beach zones. Planting times were also taken into consideration and will only occur between October and March to take advantage of the rainy winter weather.
